Silk is a high-quality animal fiber produced by caterpillars of the genus Bombyx. A silk filament is a continuous, high-strength thread, 500 to 1,500 meters long. In woven silk, the triangular structure of the fiber acts as a prism, refracting light and giving silk fabrics their prized "natural luster." Thanks to this, along with other properties such as good absorbency and low conductivity, silk is used to make high fashion garments, lingerie, upholstery, tapestries, carpets, and rugs.




During its caterpillar stage, the domesticated silkworm, Bombyx mori, feeds on fresh mulberry leaves. It then secretes a liquid protein that hardens upon contact with the environment and produces a filament coated with another secretion, sericin, to form the cocoon. In sericulture, the caterpillar in the cocoon is killed with steam or hot air, and heat is applied to soften the hardened sericin so the filament can be unwound. Since a single filament is too thin to be used, several filaments are joined together with a slight twist to form a thread, a process called spinning or "silk reeling."
