The sheep ( Ovis aries ) was domesticated 10,000 years ago. The wool is usually sheared once a year. After greasing to remove grease and dirt, the wool is carded and combed, then spun into yarn for fabric or knitted garments. Merino sheep produce about 18 kilograms of wool per year.
The Fiber
Wool has a natural crimp and scale patterns that make it easy to spin. Fabrics made from wool are thicker than other textiles, provide better insulation, and are resilient, elastic, and durable. Fiber diameters range from 16 microns in superfine merino wool (similar to cashmere) to over 40 microns in coarse-pile wools .
Uses
Wool is a multifunctional fiber with a range of diameters that makes it suitable for clothing, home textiles, and technical textiles.
Its ability to wick moisture makes wool garments comfortable as well as warm. Two-thirds of wool is used in the manufacture of garments, including sweaters, dresses, coats, suits, and activewear. Blended with other natural and synthetic fibers, wool adds drape and wrinkle resistance. Wool 's inherent resistance to fire and heat makes it one of the safest materials of all home textiles.
