Mother -of-pearl is an inorganic element of organic origin extracted from the inner layer of the shell of many mollusks, as it is secreted by them to preserve their shells or cover imperfections. When it reaches our hands, it is hard, shiny, and has iridescent hues. Its color ranges from white to pink, sepia, and gray.
Mother-of-pearl has many applications in cabinetmaking and marquetry, decorative arts, fans, buttons and jewelry, and other less glamorous applications such as weapons (some pistols and revolvers have mother-of-pearl grips).
Mother-of-pearl, on the other hand, is an imitation of mother-of-pearl, a synthetic material of plastic origin that is used for the same purposes as mother-of-pearl in order to reduce its price.
To distinguish them, you can look at the following:
Mother-of-pearl presents imperfections and more variations in color and iridescence.
Mother-of-pearl has greater uniformity in color and appearance.
To the touch, mother-of-pearl is cooler than nacre
When gently struck with a metal rod, mother-of-pearl has more reverberation and produces a higher-pitched sound than that obtained from mother-of-pearl.
