The original name of the technique, M awata , comes from Japan and means “extended cocoon” .
A "hanky" is a degummed cocoon stretched on a square frame. Each layer consists of a random web of silk threads with a dense border of fibers. The layers overlap, eventually appearing dense together.

Silk Hankies can be of different sizes, there are 10 x 10 cms., 25 x 25 cms.

They are generally made from silk cocoons that are unsuitable for reeling, that is, second-rate cocoons that are deformed, discolored, or perforated.

Mawata were originally used as stuffing in winter kimonos and other garments, and for making yarn. They are easy to spin, so they are used in textile arts, such as handmade paper and felt. (source)
