For at least 5,000 years, fibers from the flax plant (Linum usitatissimum) have been spun and woven to produce textiles.

Flax is harvested for fiber approximately 100 days after sowing. To obtain the maximum fiber length, the entire plant is uprooted or the stalks are cut very close to the root. The seeds are removed, and the stalks are reted—in a pond or on open ground—to decompose the pectin that binds the fibers together. Once the chaff is scraped, the shorter fibers are separated and used for the production of coarser textiles, while the long, soft fibers are spun and woven to produce linen textiles.

Linen is much stronger than cotton, with a soft texture and a great natural luster, highly valued for its exceptional freshness in warm climates.
