Mohair is a fiber derived from the hair of the Angora goat and a lace fabric made from this textile fiber , widely used in the manufacture of jackets and sweaters . Its main characteristics are softness and shine.
The term mohair appears to come from the Turkish word mukhya , meaning 'the finest [fleece]' and the Arabic word mukhayyar , meaning 'a cloth of goat's hair'.
The main characteristic of the Angora goat is its hair or mohair, very similar to sheep 's wool due to its chemical composition, but different in that it is more insulating, thinner and smoother, and shinier. 1 Mohair can be woven on a loom or used for knitted fabrics , it is easily dyed and produces a firm, insulating, soft and shiny material.
The fine hair of younger goats is used in clothing , but that of older animals is used for carpets and heavy fabrics for outerwear. Mohair fiber can be blended with wool to create high-quality fabrics.
Characteristics of mohair
Mohair 's diameter ranges from 23 microns at first shearing to 38 microns in older animals. Light-filled and insulating, its tensile strength is significantly higher than that of merino wool. Like wool, mohair has surface scales, but these are finer, making it soft to the touch. Light reflected from the surface gives mohair its characteristic sheen.
Mohair dyes exceptionally well and is moisture-wicking, resilient, and flame- and wrinkle-resistant. It is primarily used in knitting and crochet yarns, and in fabrics for stoles, scarves, and durable upholstery.
Mohair is often blended with wool to make high-quality linens. Weavers in Italy and Japan use mohair in blends as low as 20% to add wrinkle resistance and shine to luxurious garments.
