--

Banana fiber, also known as musa fiber , is one of the strongest natural fibers in the world. Biodegradable, this natural fiber is made from the stem of the banana tree and is incredibly durable.

Banana fiber offers many possibilities for the production of ecological fabrics. It is obtained from the stem of the banana tree and is composed of cellulose, hemicelluloses, and lignin.

Banana fiber is obtained from recycled banana stems, which farmers discard when harvesting the fruit. Harvesting it is therefore complementary. However, extracting banana fiber is not an easy process, but rather labor-intensive, especially found in the Far East. Banana thread is made by boiling strips of the pod in an alkaline solution, which softens and separates them. The fibers are then woven together to create long threads , which are then wet-spun to prevent breakage. The threads can then be dyed or woven.

Fabrics made from banana fibers are soft and flexible, as well as breathable, with natural absorbent properties. They tend to have a natural sheen that allows them to be compared to silk. It is also used to make ropes, mats, and handmade paper.
